Solid South was initially conceived when I ran across the two windows in the old Charleston Employment Building. The piece is constructed with mirrors reflecting the light through the glass. As one approaches the piece, one will notice his/her reflection, not the detail – only the color. The windows are positioned with “colored” on the right and “white” on the left. The irony is that “white” is usually the conservative on the “right.” The axe handle is a metaphor for Lester Maddox when he ran for Governor of Georgia in the sixties. The frame is natural wood with a “white” border. The lettering is original as is the glass. The title is an irony in itself.
