“Photography is the reaction of sensitive material to the energy produced by light. My work centers on this very basic principle. Parking Garage, Main Chamber #2 (1980) is a good example. In this work I record, without manipulation, the lights and shadows created in the early morning hours. The strength of this photograph, as well as other works of mine, relies on capturing the subtleties of gradations from the light source and the blackest of shadows. So black (the full absence of light) becomes just as important as the whites in gradations (i.e., the image made by the reflective light).”
