Hedy Hartman on Sara Ayers
Catawba pottery, typified by Sara Ayers’ work, is a conglomeration of ancient Indian techniques of manufacture and more modern European styles. It provides an excellent visible example of Indian acculturation into Euro-American society and is virtually the only link for the Catawba people with their pre-contact ways of life. Many of the tribal ways, including language, have now been lost forever.
