“I presently believe that art, especially sculpture, should give the viewer a sensual rather than an intellectual experience. Touching or feeling sculpture is (or should be) a major part of the sculptural experience; therefore a primary objective in my work is to include elements that invite touching to intensify the sensual experience. Intellectual analysis and discussion of work like mine only adds unnecessary insulation that cheats the viewer’s sensibilities. My sculptures ought to be felt, not heard.
Although I tend to dislike labels and categories for art, I realize that my work and my view might be interpreted to the traditional or conventional. This is not to say that I do not personally enjoy or encourage more experimental, even intellectual, approaches to sculpture. I enjoy, and believe that there is an audience someplace for both traditional and more experimental sculptural expressions in today’s culture.
The first piece purchased for the collection was Black Knife Edge in 1973. This piece is fiberglass finished with several coats of automotive lacquer. It is the third variation on this piece constructed from the same mold. The contrast between them is the hard, sharp edges and more gentle rounded forms, and the highly polished and dull surfaces invite tactile as well as visual exploration.”
