Statement
The artworks in this portfolio are large double-sided pastel drawings on handmade paper with an acrylic underpainting, from my series Inherited Matter. Scaled in relation to my own body, the work approaches the body from within: not as a figure to be represented, but as a place, a portal and a creature with its own nervous system. The front sits between abstraction and figuration, while the reverse is painted in skin tones with small marks and imperfections.
Because both sides are worked, Ear can be shown against the wall or suspended in space. When suspended alone or with other works from the series, the paper becomes a membrane that divides, filters and reorganises the viewer’s movement. I see the work as a form of soft architecture: a fragile, economical material used to create a bodily spatial experience.
Sasha Suvorova, formerly working under the name Baroque Anarchist, develops a practice concerned with the body as mutable matter. Her earlier research into anatomy, mortality, theatricality and Baroque painting has evolved into Inherited Matter, a new body of paintings and painting-objects where flesh, fabric, organ, flower and surface merge into unstable posthuman forms.
