Sarah was born in Tacoma, Washington, and spent her formative years in Oklahoma. Her formal education is in English Literature; her artist education has been an independent venture carried out since 2016. Sarah credits her love of books (design and illustration) as a significant motivator for pursuing visual arts. She lives in Dallas, Texas.

Statement

Sarah creates paintings, mixed media, and digital art rooted in the Southwest. Her work invites viewers into vibrant spaces that encourage a roving eye, and her earliest art memories are of western art. She tends to hang her hat on color, which she uses to generate rhythm and moods. The streamlined shapes and curves come from a longtime crush on art deco architecture and design.

Working from life and from photographic references, she explores the often-prickly intersection of everyday objects and her urban/suburban surroundings. Some of her earlier still life work merged with collectively understood emblems like the peace sign. She’s also repurposed seemingly innocuous motifs – hammers, rabbits, and birds – to address darker themes of violence, aggression, and anxiety. Her current work represents human connection through figures that are merged or intertwined – with other people, with animals, and with fragments of themselves. These pieces are intended to investigate themes of separation, empathy, and companionship.
