The evening light glows through the warm smoky haze of summer wild fires in the west. This shot was taken in August 2021 when fires burned over more than 2 million acres of the California and Arizona landscape, creating light show and a breathing hazard for 60 million people in the west. It also obscured the atmosphere on the east coast for a time. In spite of the beautiful effect of light these fires create, the risk to respiratory health is now substantial in 10 western states every summer. In this piece I simplified the elements of the composition so the viewer feels the effect of the atmosphere.
