I love being an artist.
I have been one for over 30 years.
I have shown my work in solo shows at Galleries in New York City, to small group shows in Paonia Colorado. However… I don’t like writing, artist statements. When I was in grade school I had trouble writing, writing anything. Research papers to personal narratives sent me into a total panic. I had mild dyslexia so reading and writing was extremely difficult. I think that’s why I studied acting in college. I couldn’t write but I could talk and emote. I didn’t find painting till I was much older. It was another way for me to express myself without having to find the perfect word and then spell it correctly to boot. I can paint and make art all day but ask me to write about it and I block.
This is what I can say… My work has always been about my family.
Painting from my grandmother’s 1930’s home movies, to images of
people I have loved and lost. These particular paintings are about my family and the woman who helped raise me. They are about privilege and race. They are about time, memories and love.
