Creating and teaching art are at the core of who I am. Art has always been a part of my life. Drawing, painting, graphic design, mixed medium, printmaking applications and book making have shaped my art as long as I can remember. Born in California, I moved frequently throughout childhood until residing in New England where I attended high school in Westport, Connecticut and then MassArt College of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts. During that time I co-founded the Graphic Workshop, an artist’s printmaking collaborative. In 1973, I moved to Wood Creek, Colorado and grew the arts program at the newly formed Aspen Community School. After teaching there for 25 years, I transitioned into the broader community and in 1996 created the Art Base (formerly the Wyly Community Art Center) then in Woody Creek, now Basalt, Colorado. I served as Director for 15 years. Now I devote my studio time on Basalt Mountain to mixed media and book arts. My work has been exhibited locally and nationally.
Images of Argentina is a series of mixed media pieces that are my response to a variety of experiences while visiting Argentina in September 2022. This was my first trip to South America and I arrived with anticipation and much excitement. I was there both as a first-time visitor and as a visiting artist as part of the Aspen-Bariloche Artist Exchange Program. I took a number of photographs with the intention of using them as a reference for future art-making. I was enthralled with every cracked sidewalk, the otherworldly vegetation, the vintage feel of a well-worn country, a shadow here, a scrape on a table there, and the artists and artifacts of the present and past. These pieces are evidence of my deep connection with the people, the culture, and the environment encompassing the love of one’s homeland and of a foreign country capturing a sense of an unforgettable experience.
