In this still life painting, "Pears, Figs, and Bottles," the artist was drawn the luxurious shape and color of the fig leaves and how they arranged themselves into a path. This painting echoes some of the same motifs found in her figure work: a strong diagonal, a movement from top to bottom, and a few hints of markmaking or in this case, objects (figs) to punctuate the changes of direction as the eye travels through the work. Like many of her figure paintings, the background is reduced to the essential swirl as the artist lets the action of the foreground objects take the eye on its trip. The bottles and pears serve as anchors in this journey on different levels and the fig leaves as a kind of fabric with their unique irresistable shape and muted green blue autumn palette. A breakthrough feeling for the artist upon painting it.
