Analogue collage ~ I experience artmaking and body as sacred vessels for self-empowerment and intuitive healing.
MessageSandra Gea is a French-Spanish self-taught artist of analogue collage (b.1978) currently based in Andalusia, Spain.
Her thought-provoking artworks infused with the spirit of dada reclaim innocence, wilderness and sensuality of the feminine body as natural states of being, overshadowed by sociocultural conditioning.
In her artistic practice and work as a facilitator and space holder, she uses collage as a transformative and integrative medium to remember the individual story - the personal mythology - and weave it into the fabric of the collective narrative.
She has exhibited across Europe and in the USA in group exhibitions. Her works are in private collections worldwide and have been featured in multiple international publications such as Art Reveal, Kolaj Magazine and Maintenant Dada Magazine. In 2017, she illustrated the haiku collection "In a Unknown Land" written by Greek poet Kostas Linnos.
Statement
My art practice is an act of self-empowerment.
My analogue collages celebrate the feminine body in her remembrance of innocence, wilderness and sensuality as natural states of being.
Through the deconstruction of pictures from fashion magazines, symbols of cultural objectification of women's bodies, I heal and rewrite personal experiences of shame and misogyny with radical earth-body wisdom.
The impulse to create from the rawest form of energy is central to my artistic inquiry. With the body as crucible, the emotional and sensory substance of memory is extracted and alchemised into meticulously hand-cut collages. This inner shamanic journey continuously expands my consciousness, sensitivity and depth - a reappropriation of the sacred body as territory and identity of my own.
My multilingual brain plays a key role when processing materials: meaning, symbol, metaphor and colloquial expressions are deconstructed and rearranged into new codes of interpretation - an unexpected and sometimes provoking combination of signs and images in the spirit of Dada.
Walking the land, bonding with its ancestral wisdom, mythology and archaeology fuels my inspiration. In dialogue with the archetype of the medial woman, she who bridges worlds - alchemist, mystic and medicine woman, I nurture my visceral need to feel into the primordial essence of creation.
