Sam Keith is an artist and photographer whose home and studios are in the East Texas woods and in the mountains of Colorado. His portfolio of work includes acrylic and mixed media paintings and fine art photography. Sam is a chemical engineer, a past rancher, a collector of books, a music lover. He grew up among the oil fields, farms and ranches of North Texas on the Red River. This was tough country; oil field remnants, tornado alley, real cowboys, extreme temperatures. ..all of which have provided a diverse background of memories.
As an engineer, Sam spent most of his life career with objectivity as the goal...then (while always loving the arts...creativity) about 25 years ago he seriously began to paint and photograph, but then found all art subjective! A beautiful part of his life began. He discovered that to create and understand art, he needed to understand himself. The quest continues.
Statement
I'm always looking for "the light"...both in painting and photography, as well as in life. I stand in awe of genius, both in man and nature. My inspiration comes from the spiritual, the mystical...great music, great books and dreams.
My work reflects who I am as I try to transfer what's within to canvas...with subject seldom the focus. It is about what matters to me...usually about the conflict within. My art can be erotic about isolation, both dense and delicate. Behind these images and paintings are emotion, imagination, and myth - all elements that affect everyone.
I paint a I feel, sometimes eclectic in thought...sometimes simple, sometimes complex. I paint from the inside out, not always sure where a work is going, just letting it out in a way that delivers the content. I've always been interested in the choices we make in life, the unknown, the freedom and spirit of living...the conflicts in life. This my effort to be honest to those emotions....hopefully I've let a few escape and will have achieved that goal.
