14k handcrafted solid yellow gold brooch designed by Salina Ramsay. The original pin was created by the artist in 1998 and was commissioned by Helen B. "Penny" Chenery. (Penny Tweedy, Secretariat's owner). The brooch was created using the lost wax techinique. In this process, the original creation is painstakingly and delicately carved to create a tiny sculptured work of art. Beginning with a chunk of green wax, the shape is sawed and filed to a basic shape and then carved with tiny instruments that are often heated with a jeweler's torch. The original commissioned piece was cast in 18k yellow gold. The 14k brooch was molded from a rubber mold that was created from Ms. Chenery's original peice created by the artist. The edition is limited to 73 to commemorate the year Secretariat won his triple crown victories.
