The scene depicts the small band of wild horses going away from the viewer, a poignant end to a powerful moment. As I painted, I felt a sense of loss, regret, nostalgia, about what might have been. It was almost as if there was some communication exchanged between myself and the horses. First impression as I photographed the horses, was "what an elegant, lovely grey mare; I would love to ride her." It was almost as if she sensed this. She was both nervous and curious at the same time. She kept looking over her shoulder until the stallion moved her off.
