Known by locals as Veitch’s Close, this close is one of the more recent to be named. Robert Veitch started business here as a baker in 1886. Several generations of the family continued to run the bakery here until the 1980s when the buildings on this part of the street were dismantled and later re-built whilst retaining the facade.
Originally a cul-de-sac the close led to the door of the bakery which was open from the early hours of the morning to supply early risers with newly fired rolls and bread, warm from the oven. The close became a through route to what became a car parking area that led to the South Vennel. This happened in the 1970s when many of the buildings to the rear were demolished.
