Sarah presenting Hagar to Abraham

A beautiful etching of the biblical subject taken from Genesis (XVI, 1-4): Sarah, Abraham's wife, presents her Egyptian servant Hagar to him so that she gives a child to Abraham. Engraved by Jean Massard (1740-1822), engraving reported in 1782 by the Mercure de France.

The original painting , 1st quarter of the 18th century , by Philip van Dyck (Little van Dyck) is part of the Louvre Collection. Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv./cat.nr. 1265.

This etching is dedicated to the French Queeen Marie Antoinette. It might be an indiscreet reference to the Queen's desire for motherhood, as it took eight years of marriage to give birth to her first daughter.
