Painting, for me, leads the work. Rarely do I lead the painting. I show up to the canvas. Sure, I have an intention but I've learned my best intentions are laughable, as the canvas usually has different ideas.
Road Less Traveled was one of those examples. Multiple layers, commercial in nature, appeared over a week of work when I had started out wanting to paint a nice comfortable field of abstract flowers. Although very busy there was a beauty to them, a symmetry I was enjoying. As I painted the criss-crossing lines, I flashed back to the many years I spent gridlocked on LA freeways and daydreamed of just getting on a winding road and driving away from it all and never coming back. I eventually did - packing up everything I had and moved to Eagle River Alaska. A radical change of geography.
These memories led to broad swipes of black freeways leading off to nowhere in particular and winding in between them was my imaginary winding escape road - 'the road less traveled.'
