‘Koma Kulshan, or simply ‘Kulshan’ is the name often associated with Mt. Baker, a 10,781 active glacier-covered peak in the North Cascades - the second most thermally active crater in the Cascade range, which demanded an enormous painting to capture the breadth of it’s grandeur!

Anyone who’s ever hiked it’s hundreds of miles of trails knows the endless vistas that stretch into … space.

Wildflowers! Endless fields of lush wildfowers as far as the eye can see. This is what I see in ‘Kulshan Meadow.’ I hope you can visualize it as well.

This painting began on a vast white 15’ canvas stretched across my studio, with very heavy base layers of gesso to create interesting texture.

Following the heavy texture, numerous acrylic washes were applied where I allowed heavy bodies of liquid acrylics and inks to mix across 15’ of canvas in a wild semi-controlled process. ‘Allowed’ in the sense that I wanted them to ‘play’ together and find just the right mix of color and viscosity that I could never achieve by forcing them together.

Thousands of additional brush strokes were added over the following days to add to and bring out the richness, depth and brilliance of this vast landscape as the wildflowers would come life.
