Two figures lean into each other, their forms intertwined as a single carved gesture. Though the work reads as two distinct bodies meeting in embrace, it was cut from one block of Westfield steatite, which Robin Antar excavated herself in Marble, Colorado before transporting the 800-pound stone to her Brooklyn studio. Through months of carving, the block was reduced to roughly 300 pounds, its negative spaces opening up the relationship between the two figures. The dark green steatite, marked with veins of paler mineral, holds a deep polish that catches the light along the curves where the figures meet. Part of Antar's Expressions in Stone series, the work translates a moment of human closeness into a permanent material form, leaving the intimacy of the embrace fixed in stone.
Embrace 1 is carved from Westfield steatite. Price includes a base and installation in the New York tri-state area.
