This piece was created in response to the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, not as a monument to tragedy, but as an offering of comfort. In the aftermath, I found myself asking: What is America? What could I carve in stone that would honor this country without reaching for the obvious symbols?
My answer was comfort food. Joy. Nostalgia. The things that remind us of who we are when the world feels unrecognizable. M&Ms became the heart of this sculpture because they represent the warmth and spirit of the American people, and my deepest wish was to give some of that back. To preserve the good old days.
The bag is hand-carved marble. The M&Ms were individually carved in marble and then cast. The bag stands 30"h x 15"w x 20"d, mounted on an 18" base.
