“The railroad was an essential and prominent aspect of Roanoke’s development,” says Moneta artist Victoria Van Tassel McGrath. “I recently discovered through a conversation with my 92 year-old mother that both my grandfather and great-grandfather were involved in the railroad industry. One was an engineer. The other laid tracks during the depression. Winston’s Caboose at the O. Winston Link Museum’s seemed a fitting setting for a self-portrait in Roanoke.”
A retired art teacher, McGrath also plays blues harmonica, an instrument that has frequently been used to approximate the sound of a train.
