- Hunton Lifesaving Crew Mural, 2024
Created by James Divers, the Hunton Life Saving Crew mural is a tribute to the Hunton Life Saving and First Aid Crew of Roanoke VA. The crew was created when WW2 veterans, returning home from war, found that they were denied access to ambulance services due to Jim Crow laws and racism. The crew provided over 40 yrs of service and made a significant impact on the Roanoke Valley, helping people from various backgrounds regardless of race. The Hunton Life Saving and First Aid Crew also taught lessons on how to prevent accidents, teach safety, give first-aid classes and training to those who wanted it, and educate young Black men and women on how to save lives. Also, it is believed that this crew was the first all-Black rescue squad in the United States. This mural depicts a photograph of the members who helped form the crew.
This mural is sponsored by the Roanoke Arts Commission and Roanoke Public Library.
