- Alex Foster
- Tree with Light, 2025
- Fabric, natural dye
- 36 x 24 in
“Nature is the original Artist. It is alive in every sense and it has so much to share.”
Beginning with white fabric, Foster dyes each piece, printing it with leaves and plant material found in Roanoke and near Tinker Creek in an array of earthy hues. The spectral imprints suggest light and a distinct place in time, and their combination through the historic art of quilting is simultaneously grounded and ethereal.
“When making the work I was thinking about the balance of light and dark, life and death, positive and negative. The ebbs and flows of these energies and the seasons are so present in the text, and it was my aim to capture these binaries within the work.”
