Currently the programs coordinator at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, Kyra Schmidt is dedicated to creating art “that is connected to and reflects the wilderness surrounding and within the city.” Last year, she piloted a community cyanotype project with local youth that included class workshops, a museum field-trip, and a 2022 exhibit of student artwork.
A self-professed photographer at heart, Kyra’s self-portrait began with an image inspired by Roanoke’s shared greenways and waterways. She then used a solarplate etching process and water-based inks to print. In this way, her work is earth-friendly and non-toxic, honoring the subject matter through the process.
