Honeum Pond is a small, shallow lagoon. Kayaking through the lily pads, I was able to photograph this plant, just below the surface of the water.
I am a biologist by vocation and a fine art photographer by avocation. Most of my photographs are of the natural world, integrating these two parts of my life. I often use digital manipulations to juxtapose locations and events that do not meet in objective space. This is because my images are not meant to be literal representations of what I saw; they are reflections on what I seek. Many of the photos include birds. As the years have gone by, I have learned the best ways to find birds, the places they frequent at different times of the year, ways to avoid alarming them. Yet, I do not think of myself as a bird photographer; my birds are often silhouettes and symbols, not fully- feathered animals. They represent to me journeys and seasons, time and passages, something that lies beneath the surface of the everyday.
