Shroud for Life by Jennifer Bastian Image: As I grieved the death of my second mother, I realized that I needed to keep my hands busy, so I began making small quilt blocks with colorful scrap fabric from recent projects. As the quilt blocks grew and surrounded me on my couch, I felt the urge to be surrounded by them as in a cocoon, blanket fort or church. Before I sewed them all together and built a structure to support them, I bathed them each in Lake Michigan, to infuse them with the calming power of the body of water I grew up a mile away from.
