Scrimshaw on a walrus ivory tusk mounted on a jaw base. Scrimshaw is a unique art form in that ivory is a rare and inherently beautiful "canvas." Scrimshaw was acknowledged as the original American art form born during the 18th century whaling industry. The white scratched design was rubbed with ink; then wiped off with the scratches holding the ink.
