This polished lapis lazuli specimen comes from deposits in the present-day Province of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, the world’s oldest known commercial gemstone sources and still producing to this day. Its name comes from both the Latin word “lapis”, meaning stone and the second part comes from the old Persian word “lazhuward” for blue and sky, the empire where the stone was first mined.
