Richard Knight
London
After twenty years as a professional artist, I've learnt to make paintings that have their own personality, any relation to the subject matter is secondary..
MessageRichard was brought up on a family farm in North Cornwall, but an ability to draw and paint led him to escape and go to art college in London and on to a career as a graphic designer and illustrator living and working in London. He now divides his time between Surrey and the Isle of Wight, inspired by the UK's rich visual heritage as an inspiration in his urbanscape and landscape pieces, he is always looking to evolve and experiment with both subject matter and materials.
He has sold hundreds of original paintings over the years and his work hangs in private collections in Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and the United States. He is represented by galleries in London and the south of England.
Statement
The ability to draw got me into art college, from there I became a designer, and after may years as a graphic artist, I used it as a springboard into a world I never thought I'd be able to succeed in, fine art painting. I had no idea where it would lead, but it was something I needed to do to express myself, an itch that I had to scratch. It took many years of experimentation, mixing with other artists, looking, thinking, trying to understand my inner voice and then interpreting it in order to feel that I was making paintings that were stamped through with my own DNA and happily, my clients wanted to buy. I now think of myself as a visual interpreter, an artist fascinated and excited by creating colours and textures and to use them to convey the essence of cities, landscapes and figures. So now I try to convey a description of place as well as an abstraction of surface, continually experimenting with texture as a translation of our visual world in a style I call classic modernism.
