Go and Meet the Rain series has its inception from a moving line in the ancient Book of Changes - the I Ching. This text deals in elemental realities and this aphorism suggested to me the greening of the desert after rainfall. This directed me to move to that place in myself where my creativity bubbles forth, and in darker, more challenging times I feel a much stronger imperative to do so.
This small and very structured painting is created by blending layer upon layer of paint. I began by using very opaque turquoise over a soft orange ground. I then worked with translucent white and green gold removing and reapplying these many many times. In this process the turquoise all but disappeared and there is a gleam of orange almost throughout the whole. The white creates a velvety cool and the green and hints of orange shine through and above this, creating a wonderful lustre. For me the greatest wonder in this little piece is how the abraded and scratched surface has an authority and forms a whole.
