Made to celebrate the Year of the Rooster 2017, Fire Rooster I is a tessellation made from roosters. The roosters, in red, crimson, gold and white, are involved in an immense cock fight. The roosters form an 8-sided shape, which is the auspicious Ba Gua symbol in Chinese culture.
The design is based on a space-filling curve on a tile that is a composite of an octagon with a square. This complex geometric structure contributes the complex relationship of the roosters - at first it looks rather regular, but a closer look shows it to be aperiodic and complex in the orientation of the fighting birds.
