Rich Loen’s Voronoi Evolution is a series of wooden sculptural works that materially translate the Voronoi algorithm into three-dimensional form. Each box represents a sequential evolution of a Voronoi pattern, allowing viewers to see mathematics unfold spatially. The works sit within Loen’s broader practice of aestheticizing data and systems, making abstract computational logic tangible, accessible, and even playful.
The Voronoi Boxes translate a mathematical structure into physical form. Derived from the Voronoi algorithm—geometric systems that divide space according to proximity—each box captures a distinct moment in the evolution of a computational pattern. What begins as an abstract algorithm becomes tactile, spatial, and materially present.
Installed sequentially, the boxes invite viewers to consider mathematics not as calculation, but as composition. Individually, each piece stands as a contained geometry; collectively, they read as a progression—a visual narrative of pattern formation.
In bringing digital logic into handcrafted wood, the work merges engineering precision with artistic and aesthetic intuition. The result is both analytical and playful: a commentary on structure, relationship, and the invisible systems that shape the spaces we inhabit.
