MessageRhiannon Rouse is a multidisciplinary artist and writer born in Woodbrook, Trinidad. They were raised by three generations of foreign language teachers that fostered in them an appreciation for culture, most prominently language. As a child, they developed an interest in poetry and painting often practicing outdoors as a source of inspiration and therapy later maturing with said practice into adulthood through their plein air works.
In their practice they navigate intersections of their identity and it’s standing within cultural conventions. Their artistry is intrinsically tied to their community outreach done through their volunteer and charity efforts. Rouse advocates for accessibility to creative spaces and artistic freedom beyond arbitrary restrictions insisting on prioritizing pleasure and collective comfort as a form of justice and resistance.
The artist now resides within the mountains of Trinidad’s northern range where they carry out their artistic practice alongside their beloved feline.
Statement
The artist’s objective is to use their work as a vessel to interrogate the relationship between dichotomies that exist within the human condition with turns of phrases as well as cultural acts of living and the why behind them being the reoccurring impetus behind creation. The artist would frequently use found objects as well as the human body in their process.
