I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE I have not shared this painting of Paris with you yet!
It’s a strong image, I think, and is so very representative of Paris at nighttime.
Standing in my Paris window, rather than looking out at the Tour Montparnasse or the Eiffel Tower (both which blink quite a lot), here we are looking at the quietness within - What time of night is it, anyway?
It seems to be the middle of the night, when all is quiet.
Is that the light of the rising sun in the distance, behind the building? Or the dimming lights of the city as it goes to sleep?
Don't you just love the roofs of Paris? Their romantic silhouette makes my heart sing!
In this painting, the wall surrounding the window is a dark burgundy, that indistinct color you see when the night is so dark, and your eyes are slowly adjusting to the dim light.
More than seeing the rising sun lighting up the sky behind the buildings, we can see that there was one light on—only one—and that it is splashing light out the window onto the courtyard. Who was up at that time of night? Was it a mother with her sleepless child? Was it someone doing laundry? Perhaps a cook getting my breakfast ready...
Does this scene pull you into that serene courtyard? Did you see the splash of light blue spilling out of the lit window? It almost looks like a swimming pool, doesn't it?
But it is not.
The inner courtyard of Paris is where the services are held, where the recycling and trash bins live, and where the bicycles get parked overnight.
This painting is calming, with all of its difference shades of blue. The lines lead our eye into the distance - but what do we find there?
Bold shapes that form the sky, the window, and the edges of the roofs are what makes this city memorable.
