While this artwork is N.F.S., I do accept commissions. This work is a part of my continued exploration into incorporating copper in it`s various forms into my artistic practice. This began with my Guest Artist Residency in Cypress Hills, Sask. in 2011.
One of the constraints of working on copper, is the suggested maximum size. Do to expansion and contraction of the metal and it's weight; it is recommended not exceed 20``x 24`` for the image. By using a mosaic approach to my image and using 34 gauge copper for most of the tiles, most concerns were addressed. The work is mounted on three quarter inch melamine coated board. The framer now thinks I can reduce this on the next project without having the work bow. Strap hangers are used on the back.
The Frenchmen River Valley is just south of Cypress Hills, Sask. and is a place one can see many varieties of natural prairie grass. These are referenced on the 24 gauge copper that has been pierced out by hand. The infrequency of light from man made sources makes this an excellent area to view many celestial bodies such as Mars, the moon, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and the Perseid Meteor Show. These are referenced in the 24 gauge copper pieces that have been domed, fold formed and texturized by roll press ( jeweler's techniques). I wish to acknowledge Canadian jeweler; Melody Armstrong who so generously shared of her expertise during my time spent in The Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre jewelry studio in Regina.
Note: Fold Forming is a technique that was invented by Charles Lewton-Brain; Melody`s instructor at the Alberta College of Art and Design where she earned Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Jewelry and Metals. She graduated with Distinction in 1999.
