Artist: Mary Proenza
Mary Proenza is a printmaker, painter, and writer. In 2022, she was a Guest Artist on an NEA Arts Project grant, and created four linoleum cut prints accompanying a short story by Los Angeles writer Jervey Tervalon, published as a limited edition letterpress book from Michigan's Kalamazoo Book Arts Center. Proenza is currently working on graphic memoir, which has been supported by a 2022 Mid Atlantic Arts Fellowship at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and by a 2020 Mednick Fellowship from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges. Other residency grants include the Jentel Foundation, Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico,Springboard for the Arts, New York Mills Cultural Center, and Dorland Mountain Arts Colony. Her recent visual art exhibitions include "Cladogram," the 2nd Annual Juried International Biennial at Katonah Museum of Art and “One in a Year” at the Painting Center, NYC. Her written art reviews have appeared in Art in America and The Brooklyn Rail. Mary Proenza completed a BA in literature at UC Santa Barbara's College of Creative Studies, an MFA in painting at New York Studio School, and an MFA in creative writing at The New School. She's currently an Associate Professor of Art at Marymount University, Arlington, VA.
