Artist: Andi Cullins
Andi Cullins often refers to herself as the “Grandma Moses
of Fiber Arts”, having started her artistic career at age 70.
Ms. Cullins is largely self- taught in her artistry but received
some early art training as a member of the Philadelphia
Public School’s Saturday Art League, a joint program of PPHS
and Temple University. After undergraduate work at Catholic
University in Washington, D.C., Andi spent over forty years in
corporate executive search where she was known as an
insightful problem solver, and communicator; talents she brings to her art.
Post retirement, In 2020 she began creating the art quilts, which she calls her 2nd Life Quilter’s Collection. She “paints with fabric”. Andi calls her current body of work “CODE SWITCH” as it draws heavily on the interposition of mainly African and Australian Aboriginal prints, along with other indigenous prints, and traditional western fabrics. These are combined with her own hand-dyed fabrics to create quilts that are fabric mosaics and collages. Most recently, she has applied this same design sensibility to 3-dimensional objects and wearables.
Andi believes this pallet best expresses not only her own bi-racial identity, but also the true nature of American culture, which borrows heavily from the influences and contributions of
minority populations. Many of her larger works have been in displayed in galleries and are in private and
municipal collections. She has had several solo shows in area galleries and at the Va. Quilt Museum. Her work has also been featured in international publications.
You can find more of her work on the web at www.secondlifequilter.com or on Facebook
as 2ndLifeQuiltersCollection.
Ms. Cullins is a long-time resident of the Washington DC area and currently resides in Maryland.
