Vanishing Point

The inspiration for this bench inspiration was the classic, simple geometric forms of the existing park landforms and elements. The artist used the concept of vanishing lines (the convergence of lines as they move towards a point on the horizon) to complement these forms and to accommodate a variety of people, from small children to tall adults. The bright orange color complements the yellow and orange palette of existing park elements.
The bench is fabricated from formed steel plate, a readily available material which has the ability to create sophisticated, highly sculptural forms through simple fabrication techniques. The finished piece, created by manipulating basic flat shapes into 3 dimensional forms, is naturally sprung which allows a subtle flex when in use. The form will interact with light and shadow to create different affects throughout the day.
"Vanishing Point" was sponsored by Dave Thomas and the Waldinger Corporation. It was one of thirteen sculptural benches installed in 2010 along the paths of the Gene Leahy Mall as part of the "Take a Seat" project. The bench was moved from that location when renovations to the mall began in 2019, and placed in its current location along Flanagan Lake Road at Flanagan Lake.
