The design team of Jeremy Carlson, Caleb Rogers and Dwayne Brown wanted to create a unique bench that was inviting, comfortable and timeless. This was done by using a simple, iconic bench form, allowing the user to focus on the function of bench before the design becomes apparent in the details. The bench pays homage to the Gene Leahy Mall by using similar colors and construction techniques. It mimics the cast-in-place concrete and wood inserts of varying depths used throughout the park, while the primary steel elements are painted orange to match the light fixtures that surround the park. The simple form of the bench also allows for temporary bike storage.

"Serenity" was sponsored by Studio 360 Architecture. It was one of thirteen sculptural benches installed in 2010 along the paths of the Gene Leahy Mall as part of the "Take a Seat" project. The bench was moved from that location when renovations to the mall began in 2019, and placed in its current location along Flanagan Lake Road at Flanagan Lake.
