Rebar

The concept for this bench evolved from watching the construction of highways and seeing all of the rebar that goes into the concrete pours. The designers' vision was to pull this rebar out of the concrete and sculpt it to create spaces for sitting and talking. The concrete pad is also the structural component that anchors all of the rebar back into the ground.
"Rebar" was sponsored by Randy Brown Architects. It was one of thirteen sculptural benches installed in 2010 along the paths of the Gene Leahy Mall as part of the "Take a Seat" project. The bench, which had been damaged beyond repair, was permanently removed from exhibition when renovations to the mall began in 2019.
