Po-Yan Tsang is a contemporary representational painter. She was born and raised in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto, Canada with her family when she was a teenager.
Po-Yan starts her works from direct observation, through painting plein air, still life setups, or reference sketches and photos she takes herself. Her artistic voice is informed by her experience as a first-generation Chinese immigrant, a deep love of nature, and the unique beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibits at regional galleries including Chatwin Arts, Gallery Axis, Magnuson Park Gallery, Domicile Gallery + Design, and Confluence Gallery. She is a 2022 recipient of the Artist Trust GAP Grant. In 2025, she completed the Public Art Intensive Eastside workshop and was selected to showcase new works through the Shunpike Storefronts Program and the Downtown Redmond Art Walk.
She is a graduate of the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. Before that she worked professionally in the software industry for over a decade and holds degrees in engineering. Po-Yan currently works from the Equinox Studios in Georgetown, Seattle, WA.
Statement
Painting is the lens through which I process and observe the world around me. I find inspiration in nature, the mundane, and the quiet spaces in modern life.
My works start from direct observation, through painting plein air, still life setups, or reference sketches and photos I take myself. Through my paintings I seek to convey my inner experience through the visual language.
