Free the Music PGH is an initiative founded by Hudson Colletti, a Pittsburgh musician who envisions public pianos throughout Pittsburgh to foster human connection through music, with the potential to break down the barriers between us.
Created by artist Jessica Brown, this piano is an exploration of empathy. The artist describes her method as “subtractive ... for me, has to do with exerting control over my environment. Having things just so, exacting and tidy. I use resin for similar reasons. As it solidifies it gives me the sense of holding a moment precisely as it is, freezing it in time. My work, however, is not about control, but the lack of it; often centered on Impermanence I inject elements to disrupt the calm I’ve worked to create, infusing it with the unknown.”
This piano is painted a muted mid-toned blue, decorated with embroidery styled flowers and small trinkets set on top of the piano.
