Comadres (or gossips) are a unique expression in Portugal to represent someone who is more than a brother to you, even if not of your blood. Comadres are "thick as thieves" and here they represent the gossiping, plotting and conniving needed to upend the status quo and create space for a new era of culture and social progress.
