This work layers a 3D-rendered, colorized version of the postcard’s front image onto its reverse, bringing the original black-and-white scene into renewed presence.
Two young chimney sweeps sit facing one another, raising glasses of red wine in a quiet toast. Dressed in heavy leather workwear, their tools close at hand, they pause beside an ornate cabinet clock—time looming behind labor.
The postcard was sent from Pravalí, a small town in Moravia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.Chimney sweeps were essential to coal-fired energy systems, maintaining the flues that powered homes and cities.
Beneath the image, the German message is polite and unremarkable, a routine exchange of health and greetings.
The juxtaposition underscores how hazardous, embodied labor sustained everyday life, even as it faded into the background of casual communication.
