Originally from the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, Paula Maenza Roland moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1989. Paula is drawn to geographic areas that are culturally rich, have a strong sense of place and environmental extremes. These elements are evident in her works in both subtle and overt ways. New Mexico, with its proximity to big science, art, and spirituality, is a nexus for the exploration of the unknown and an arena for developing inventive processes and new ideas.
Paula Roland received a BA from Dominican College and an MFA from the University of New Orleans. She is the recipient of many grants and awards including one from the National Endowment for the Arts and two installation grants from the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Roland has twice been awarded residencies from the Santa Fe Art Institute, working with Lynda Benglis and Elizabeth Murray. Roland received two fellowships from the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, including their Fellowship Abroad Program in France.
Public collections holding Paula’s work include Agilent Technologies, R&F Handmade Paints and the American Embassies in Uganda and South Africa. Notable figures in art, including Lowery Stokes Sims, Roberta Smith, Susan Krane, and Louis Grachos, have selected Paula’s works for exhibition and award. Roland has had 18 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions at galleries, museums and art spaces in the United States and Europe. Roland Exhibits internationally and is represented in Santa Fe by William Siegal Gallery.
Paula Roland’s work is featured in numerous publications including The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax, by Joanne Mattera, Embracing Encaustic by Linda Womack, Daniella Woolf”s Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility, and Alexia Tala’s Installations and Experimental Printmaking. Her works are also included in the upcoming Encaustic: A Guide to Creating Fine Art with Wax by Lissa Rankin. Paula Roland’s new teaching DVD, Encaustic Monotypes: Painterly Prints with Heat and Wax, was released in June, 2010.
