HERS: Inside/Outside is a collaborative, interactive installation developed with Menucha between 1981 and 1994.
First exhibited in Women’s Tools (juried by May Stevens), the work evolved into a participatory environment incorporating a 50-minute audio recording of women speaking about lived experience. Viewers entered an enclosed interior space, sat, listened, and contributed written reflections, transforming the installation into a site of collective voice.
Presented at Arlington Arts Center (curated by Philip Brookman) and later at the University of Maryland through PANDORA, the work explored the tension between internal identity and external social roles. It was widely engaged by audiences, even as critical response remained mixed.
