Atlanta-born Patricia A. Jackson, creates vibrant beadwork that celebrates abstract art, nature, and her African American heritage.
MessageBorn and raised in Atlanta, GA, Patricia A. Jackson was a visual arts educator in the Atlanta Public School system for 30 years. During this time, she developed an interest in collecting and stringing beads. Eventually, she joined local beading groups and became proficient in more intricate and complex bead weaving techniques. Her exposure to craft artists such as Joyce Scott, Xenobia Bailey, and Evette Everett has influenced her view of beading as a fine art.
Statement
My work reflects my interest in personal adornment and wearable art, as I believe that what we wear expresses who we are. Beadwork is an ancient tradition that has been created by various cultures all over the world. I prefer the irregularity of Czech and Indian glass beads to the more uniform Japanese seed beads, which results in more unique finished pieces. The act of beading for me is meditative and calming. My preferred techniques allow for improvisation, such as random stringing, bead embroidery, and free-form peyote, which enables me to combine the varied colors, sizes, and finishes of the beads and stones to create contemporary jewelry designs with historical and/or cultural references.
