Statement
My paintings advance historical visual art through stories about persons experiencing life situations within a cultural context. They reveal seemingly ordinary, yet significant moments by studying the fleeting instant when individual reactions reveal personality traits and relationship interactions. My viewers are then prompted to reflect upon the relation of these stories to their own lives.
My work presents a visuality with references from the art historical to the contemporary culture through scenes that support a narrative, much akin to theatrical settings. There is no “right” answer to questions raised through these stories. I leave all interpretations to my viewers.
My focus is on the fleeting instant that is difficult for the eye to capture. I take numerous photographs to create a frame of reference for my subjects as well as a setting for the story. I believe the “eye” is just as important to the photographer as it is to the draftsman. Yet, my work is not in the photo realist mode.
My work fuses concept, imagery, and pigment to produce a visual story. It is painterly and expressive. I paint for the pigment to be an indication of a passage’s significance with brushwork that sets a reading tempo. As important, the painting is about the process of painting.
My studies resulted in undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Studio Art. After school, life commitments took priority. Still, I always painted, though not with the energy needed to develop my craft. Eventually, the life experiences and insights gained from a decades long career in museums and educational institutions became profound influences and a foundation upon which I now daily approach my work. The result is a body of work that challenges viewers.
PATRICIA HYNES
Making art is one of the few areas in life where one can truly be free to express insights about the full range of human experiences.
The act of painting is one of the rare instances in life where one can unconditionally express one’s emotions and thoughts. It is a calling that is not to be taken lightly, or without responsibility. It is not something the artist chooses to do like a man stream career. It is something the artist is driven to produce -- the unattainable. In reality, this is work that will never be perfect, for the imperfections, mistakes and frustrations the artist experiences in one painting are the driving factors that lead to the next work. This starts with a concept in the artist’s mind that is challenged by a confrontation with the canvas to transform it into a statement about life. Life with all its twists and turns, good and bad, happy and sad, beautiful and repulsive. But life that is lived by all.
