Larry Hulburt x
Larry Hulburt, now in his 70s, has embraced painting as a vibrant new passion in his retirement years. Born and raised in the Flint, Michigan area, Larry spent over three decades as an educator, dedicating his life to teaching and shaping young minds in his community. Flint, with its rich history and challenges, shaped much of Larry’s perspective, fostering a deep appreciation for resilience, creativity, and the power of personal expression.
After retiring from teaching, Larry explored a variety of activities that brought him joy, including running, biking, and photography. However, it was painting that captured his imagination and offered a fresh way to channel his creative energy. What began as a personal exploration has blossomed into a meaningful artistic pursuit. His first public showing at Art in the Park in Freeland marked a turning point, where several of his pieces were sold, affirming that his artwork resonated with the local community.
Larry’s artistic style is best described as mosaic. Each painting begins with a black background, and from there, he intuitively adds shapes and layers of color. His process is meditative and thoughtful, often involving long stretches of time spent reflecting on the work as it unfolds. His creations take days, sometimes longer, as he sits, looks, and ponders how to fill the canvas in a way that brings the piece to life. For Larry, each painting is a journey, a slow and deliberate unfolding of forms and emotions. Through his paintings, he hopes to evoke thought, inspire reflection, and perhaps offer a glimpse of the beauty that emerges when patience and creativity meet.
