Artist: Michelle Marcotte (American, b. 1968)
Michelle Marcotte is an abstract artist based in Midland, Michigan. She uses an intuitive technique where color is placed, marks are made, and many layers are added until the canvas begins to compose a story.
Mostly self-taught, Marcotte uses pastels and acrylic paint to create the shapes and color combinations she sees and feels in nature. She aims to draw attention to the unpredictable ways that the natural world displays itself. Marcotte is known for using vivid colors and working primarily on large canvases.
Among her favorite influences are Henry Matisse, Georgia O’Keefe, and Brian Rutenberg. She was also heavily influenced by her mother, who is also an artist, and the late Kathy Jones.
Marcotte is a member of the Midland Artists Guild and has shown her work at Espresso Milano, Live Oak, and Creative 360, all in Midland, MI. She was a participant in The Midland Center for The Arts Summer Art Fair and created a mural as a collaborator with Parker Lane Art and Design at Bay City’s MI Short Stay. With Public Arts Midland, she created a painting for The Community Bench Project on a picnic table that remains at Creative 360.
The art that Marcotte creates is frequently on display at Bespoke Salon in Midland, which she co-owns with her sister. She is also known for her nail artistry, as she has been a Licensed Manicurist for 22 years.
